About Henry Blackmon
For many years I have been involved with the fine arts. I'm a student of the ancient art of Egypt, Greece and Rome as well as the Renaissance and later movements like Impressionism and the Harlem Renaissance. Some of my favorite artists are Monet, Manet, Renoir, Henry Ossawa Tanner, Edward Mitchell Bannister, Aaron Douglas, Mary Cassatt, John Singer Sargent, Jerry Pinkney and American icon Norman Rockwell. I am also a huge fan of comic book artist Jack Kirby who was co-creator along with Stan Lee of characters like Captain America, Spiderman and the Hulk. I started out as a boy wanting to draw comic books but was introduced to painting and other media by my parents. My father would tape the TV artists Bob Ross and Bill Alexander for me in the 80's to watch when I came home from school. This was a remarkable learning experience as a teen.
After High School, I attended Morris Brown College in Atlanta where I earned a fine arts degree. My goal with this degree was to illustrate children's books but a strange thing happened. I was asked to teach art to a group of summer campers in the Atlanta area which I did and loved. I decided to go back to school to pursue an art education degree which I did from Georgia State University. I've taught art in the Atlanta metro area for two decades and even got voted teacher of the year in 2011. I was also named arts teacher of the year in 2002 by the Barbie Mattel toy company. Teaching has been a very rewarding experience for me and I hope as well to the students I've taught through the years. I'm now ready to venture out and share my work with the world hoping to illustrate children's books as I've always dreamed. I'm very excited about this opportunity to create and share my work with the world starting with you. I look forward to providing you with my works or even collaborating with you on a possible idea or a purchase of current work.
Sincerely,
Henry M. Blackmon III
